Alice V. Long, 92, of Syracuse died at 6:27 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009 at Goshen General Hospital in Goshen, IN. She was born on November 4, 1916 in Nappanee, IN to Walter Earl & Adah (Plank) Malcolm.
She was a lifetime Kosciusko and Elkhart County area resident. She graduated in 1937 from Nappanee High School in Nappanee, IN & then from Manchester College in North Manchester, IN with her bachelor's degree. She was married on May 6, 1945 in Nappanee, IN to Charles A. Long who preceded her in 1982.
She retired in 1979 from Fairfield Community Schools as a Millersburg Elementary Teacher after 16 years of service. She also formerly taught at Jefferson & Stump Elementary Schools in Elkhart County. She was owner / operator of Long's Landing and assisted her husband for many years on the family farm which is a Hoosier Homestead Family Farm. She was a former Kosciusko County Farm Bureau Woman of the Year recipient. She was a distant cousin to former First Lady Barbara Bush, former president George W. Bush, and former president Franklin Pierce.
She was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Rebecca Circle, 45+ Sunday School Class, and formerly taught Sunday School for 25 years; Hi Neighbor Home Economics Club in Syracuse; founding member of the Efficient Homemakers Club in North Webster; Lakeland Kiwanis Club in North Webster; Red Hat Ladies Group of North Webster; past president and member of the Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers in Warsaw; and past board member of the Kosciusko County Farm Bureau in Warsaw.
She is survived by:
1 Son - Doug (wife, Dee) Long of North Webster;
5 Daughters - Mrs. Jim (Suzanne) Mendenhall of Ocean View, HI, Carolyn Long of North Webster, Rosalyn Hodge of Denver, CO, Mrs. Chris (Darlene) Hill of Muncie, IN, & Mrs. Steve (Rebecca) Jefferies of Illinois;
13 Grand, 13 Gt. Grand, & 3 Gt. Gt. Grandchildren;
1 Sister - Dorothy Rink of Millersburg, IN;
3 Brothers - Robert Malcolm of Elkhart, George (wife, Kate) Malcolm of Nappanee, & Don Malcolm of Fort Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 sisters - Mary Malcolm, Lucille Mussleman, Doris Malcolm, & Sarah Malcolm; 1 brother - John Malcolm.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2009 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, IN and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the North Webster United Methodist Church with Rev. David Smitley of the church officiating. Burial will follow in the North Webster Cemetery.
Memorial bequest may be given to North Webster Community Center or Lakeland Kiwanis. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church.
