Avon J. Bushong

Avon J. Bushong, 99, of Syracuse, IN passed away at 1:03 a.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Goshen Hospital. He was born on December 27, 1921 in Syracuse, IN to Joseph R. & Olive M. (Geyer) Bushong.

He was a lifetime Syracuse area resident and graduated in 1940 from Syracuse High School. He was a WW II Army veteran and an Omaha Beach survivor. He was married on September 30, 1945 in Elkhart, IN to Mary Ellen Kunkel who preceded him on September 30, 2015. He retired from the Syracuse Post Office after 36 years, where he served the last 7 years as Postmaster and following retirement he served as groundskeeper for Wawasee High School for several years.

He was a 70 + year member of Grace Lutheran Church in Syracuse.

He is survived by:

Daughter – Mary Kay Ridings of Syracuse

Son – Douglas (Liz) Bushong of Johnson City, TN

3 Grand & 4 Gt. Grandchildren

Brother – Jon (Jenny) Bushong of Syracuse

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother – George Bushong.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, IN. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Wendy Piano officiating. Burial will take place in the Syracuse Cemetery.
