Berniece Rogena (Baker) Goodin, 91, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 8:15 AM in Golden Years Homestead Nursing Home, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Bernie, as she was known, was born in Allen County, Indiana on April 6, 1922 to Arthur R. and Dessie (Tonkel) Opliger.
On October 20, 1941 she became the bride of Cecil Andrew Baker. Throughout much of her life and during the growing up years of their children, she and Cecil lived in the New Haven and the Lake Gage area. Cecil passed away January 22, 1970. During the summer of 1972 Bernie would marry Jim Goodin. They eventually moved from Lake Gage to Snow Lake, then to Fort Wayne before moving to Auburn where Jim would pass away August 5, 1996. Bernie would then make a new home with her daughter and son-in-law in Warsaw, Indiana until her move to Golden Years Homestead in 2009.
Bernie was a busy homemaker. During the many years of selling Avon she made lots of friends because of her wonderful smile and sweet disposition. Bernie had a special gift of lovingly caring for others. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and gardening and was a good seamstress. She loved sunshine and boating. Music was a huge part of Bernie's life; she and her family often enjoyed singing together. Over the years she attended New Haven United Methodist Church, Waterloo United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Those who loved her most and who will always cherish precious memories are son and daughter-in-law: Nickey and Jo Baker of Belton, Texas; 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Sherry and Glen Yoder, Warsaw; Carol and Gene Bosworth, Angola; and Lana and Mike Anderson of New Haven; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law: Vera and Donald Reiter of Leo, Indiana and Lorraine Pearsall of Brevard, North Carolina; step son: Kim and his wife, Joyce, Goodin, Fort Wayne; 17 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, Bernie was preceded in death by her son, Kenton Keith Baker (March 20, 2007); and brother: Howard Arthur Opliger (December 14, 1999).
Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing in support of each other Sunday, March 9th from 3 -4 PM in Trinity United Methodist Church, Warsaw. A service celebrating the life of Berniece R. Goodin will follow beginning at 4 PM in the church with its pastor, Rev. David Hummel, officiating. Burial will take place Monday, March 10th at 11 AM in Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Indiana.
The family has asked that gifts in Bernie's memory be given to Golden Years Homestead, 3136 Goeglein Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46815.
