DeVon "Smitty" Smith, 96, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 6 PM at Mason's Health & Rehabilitation, Warsaw, Indiana.
He was born March 4, 1918 in Mentone, Indiana to Melvin Merle and Radie Fawn (Jones) Smith.
Smitty first married Grace Baugher in 1939 in Warsaw; then on March 4, 1948 he and Opal Warstler were married.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, Smitty owned restaurants for 30 years. They included Candy Cane, Dog & Suds, Cozy Cottage and The Calico Kitchen.
He attended Dutchtown Brethren Church, Warsaw.
Survivors include his loving daughter and son-in-law: Sandy and Gene Zartman of Leesburg, Indiana; granddaughter: Kimberly Zartman, Warsaw; granddaughter-in-law: Rose Zartman, Leesburg and 2 additional grandchildren; great granddaughter: Alaina Zink, Winona Lake, Indiana and 3 additional great grandchildren; 1st wife: Grace Randall, Warsaw; and half sister: Betty Metzger, South Whitley, Indiana.
Smitty was preceded by daughter: Dianna Wright, 2nd wife: Opal Smith (June 23, 1985), grandson: Tony Zarman (May 16, 2010), twin brother: Doyle Smith (June 26, 2002), step son: David Lee Halterman, step mother: Hazel P. Smith (1992); sister: Violet Smoker; and half sister: Florence Jean Snyder.
Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing in support of each other Friday, March 21st from 4-8 PM at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. A service celebrating the life of DeVon "Smitty" Smith will take place Saturday, March 22nd at 10 AM in the funeral home. Pastor Jack Worth of Dutchtown Brethren Church and Pastor Dennis Bollenbacher, Mason's Health & Rehabilitation chaplain will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
The family has asked that gifts in Smitty's memory be given to a charity of choice or simple acts of kindness may be done for others in his memory.
The staff of Titus Funeral Home considers it a privilege to care for the family and friends of DeVon "Smitty" Smith.
