Douglas Brian Miller passed away in his Elkhart home surrounded by his wife (Steffany), daughter (Grace), son (Gabriel), daughter-in-law (Erica), granddaughter (Bridgette Rose), and sister-in-law (Starr Cox) on June 15th, 2020. On April 29th, 2020,
Douglas was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver. Cancer did not win the battle though, Douglas won the good fight. He went to the glorious place he loved telling people about, Douglas went to Heaven to be with Jesus.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Steffany Miller; his sons, Gabriel (Erica) Miller and Aaron Miller; daughters, Grace Miller, Jodie Miller, Cherie (Brian) Rexroth; eight grandchildren; brother, Bruce (Chris) Miller; many loved nieces and nephews; serval great nieces and nephews that are so special; and the family chihuahua, Twinkles.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Elaine Miller; and brother, Chad Miller.
Douglas was born to Forrest and Elaine Miller on July 7th, 1954. Growing up in the hollow of South Bend, he enjoyed sports and being around his two brothers; Bruce & Chad. He attended Indiana State University where he played his beloved sport of football.
On December 5th, 1992, Douglas married his beautiful wife, Steffany. Together, centered around Jesus, they enjoyed life to the fullest. Douglas was a hard worker and a lover of projects and spending time with his family. He spent many years of his life working as a respiratory therapist, then later in life, Douglas enjoyed projects in his retirement. Douglas was a devote Christian and a faithful member of Calvary Chapel Church in Granger, IN., for 22 years. He had an unwavering relationship with his Savior. Douglas constantly prayed out loud for God to shine favor on all of his children and wife. Douglas loved watching football and talking about it with Grace and Gabriel. During the 2013 Nebraska football season Douglas and his family spent every weekend traveling and cheering on his boy, the long snapper. Douglas treasured the time when his girl, Grace, came home monthly to visit because that meant there would be a homemade vegan German Chocolate cake to be made. When Douglas and his bride became empty nesters, Friday nights turned into their well deserved date nights. Douglas enjoyed playing euchre with many of their family friends, as long as they played by the Hoyle book of rules.
The last year of Douglas’ life was filled with overflowing love. In July, while visiting Gabriel & Erica for a family vacation to Richmond, VA., Douglas found out he would soon be welcoming a new baby Miller into the family. In November, Douglas and Steffany went on their yearly getaway to Florida. Of course they spent a day at the most magical place on earth per the request of Douglas, along with a day touring the Holy Land experience. In December, Douglas and his wife traveled to Lexington, KY., to visit their daughter, Grace. All three of them went on to spend Christmas in Florida for a big holiday family vacation. In January, Douglas met his granddaughter, Bridgette Rose, his heart grew three times the size when he held her for the first time. In March, Grace came home to social distance at the family home with Douglas and Steffany. During that time they spent many hours playing scrabble, watching movies, sitting by the creek, and building a foosball table. In May, Gabriel, Erica, and Bridgette came to the family home to add onto the support system. The family spent the last month together loving on Bridgette and worshipping God.
Since Douglas was diagnosed, the family house was filled with many cherished friends and loving family. Our church Pastor, Ryan and Meredith Searfoss came over to pray daily during the last couple of weeks. We’re grateful for our family who came to stay and support our sweet Dougly: mother-in-law, Sandy Hunter; sister-in-law, Starr Cox; and niece, Kassandra Kimmel. Lastly, thank you to everyone who has prayed for us, sent sweet cards, brought meals, texted encouraging messages, and came over to pray, sing, & visit.
Although pancreatic cancer did not give Douglas or his family the time they wanted together. The time God did allow Douglas to be on earth was fulfilled with love, family, friends, work, and Gaither music.
Douglas wished to have a natural funeral. He was laid to rest at the Porter Rea Cemetery in Potato Creek. In celebration of the life Douglas lived, his memorial service will be at Calvary Chapel Church, 53494 Fir Rd, Granger, IN. 46530, on Friday, June 19th, at 6:30 p.m.
