Edith A. Avery, 76, of Syracuse, IN passed away at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at her home. She was born on August 22, 1936 in LaGrange, IN to Moses E. & Goldie F. (Miller) Mast.
She lived all of her life in Elkhart / Kosciusko Counties, permanently moving to Syracuse in 1952 from Millersburg. She attended Millersburg public schools and was married on August 25, 1954 in Syracuse to Owen D. Avery who preceded her on December 7, 1986. She was a homemaker and retired from the Wawasee Community School Corporation as a custodian at Wawasee High School after 15 ½ years.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 223 & V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 1382 both in Syracuse. She attended the New Salem Church of the Brethren and formerly attended the Church of the Brethren in Syracuse.
She is survived by:
2 Daughters – Mrs. Dewayne (Sharon) Lemler of Nappanee & Mrs. Gary (Esther) Fisher of Leesburg
3 Step Sons – Frederick (wife, Eleanor) Avery of Plymouth; Jimmie (wife, Crystal) Avery of Syracuse; & Allen (wife, Carol) Avery of Syracuse.

3 Sisters - Mrs Randy (Lillian) Oakes of Elkhart; Mrs Karl (Evelyn) Pendill of Grand Saline, TX; & Irma Yakim of Syracuse
2 Brothers – LeRoy Mast of Ligonier & Alvin (wife, Cheryl) Mast of Frostproof, FL
2 Daughters in Law – Deborah Avery of Milford & Mary Avery of King’s Mountain, NC
She was preceded by her parents, husband, 3 sons – Ivan, Charles & David Avery, grandson – Deric Lemler, granddaughter – Jessica Rodriguez, great grandson – Gideon Rodriguez, step grandson – Tim Swango, 4 sisters – Viola Holmes, Ella Warren, Dorothy Blackport, & Mary DeFreese, 5 brothers – Tobias, Perry, Eli, Lloyd & Allen Mast.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor Dean Kagarise of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
