Ethel Mae Barnett, 88, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014 at 1:50 PM at Elmcroft of Xenia, Xenia, Ohio. Born April 17, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was the daughter of Shirley Elery and Beatrice Vernon (Barto) Shaneyfelt. Ethel graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne and attended Fort Wayne Bible Institute. She earned her RN after graduating from South Chicago Community Hospital School of Nursing. Receiving her Bachelor of Science from Grace College, she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of St. Frances, Fort Wayne.
Ethel lived most of her life in Warsaw and was a nurse within the Warsaw Community School System and an industrial nurse for Zimmer.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pierceton. Ethel had a servant’s heart in all she did - including activities within the churches she attended over the years, the many short term mission trips she went on, the ways she worked with Christian ministries - one of which included volunteering with Lakeland Child Evangelism Ministries. Ethel went on several mission trips to Russia with the Josh McDowell Ministry. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting items and making Gospel bracelets for various ministries. She shared totes that she made from strips of shopping bags. Ethel was always available to help care for the elderly, from baking muffins to helping attend to their personal needs.
Left with memories to treasure of a most wonderful mom and grandma are her daughter, Debra Wilson of Xenia; 4 grandchildren: Micah (and Amanda) Wilson, Xenia; Nate (and Angie) Wilson of Columbus, Ohio; Rebekah Wilson and her fiancé, Matt Craig, Xenia; and Rachel Wilson and her fiancé, Samuel Stevenson, also of Xenia.
Preceding Ethel in death is her son, Jeffrey Marc Barnett (June 22, 1977), 2 brothers: Robert Shaneyfelt and Wayne Shaneyfelt; and 5 sisters: Dorothy Paxson, Betty Williams, Mildred Sitcler, Infant Patricia Ruth Shaneyfelt and Infant Mary Helen Shaneyfelt; and most recently, her son-in-law, Pastor Rick Wilson (July 12, 2013).
Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing in support of each other Friday, August 29th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. A service celebrating the life of Ethel Mae Barnett will follow beginning at 12:00 Noon in the funeral home. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
The family has asked that gifts in Ethel’s memory be given to Lakeland Child Evangelism Ministries, 1430 S. 450E, Pierceton, Indiana 46562 OR to Grace Covenant Church (piano fund), 780 N. Fairfield Road, Beavercreek, Ohio 45434.
