Fred Self Byland, 79, of Milford, IN died at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse. He was born on March 15, 1930 in Warsaw, IN to Nelson & Elnora Louise (Self) Byland.
He graduated in 1949 from Syracuse High School and attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL for two years. On June 10, 1952 in Nahunta, GA, in a double wedding ceremony with lifelong friends, Ed & Bonita Kizer, he married Geraldine Ann “Gerry” Tharp who survives. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He returned to the Syracuse area in 1968 from Fort Wayne, IN and was co-owner along with his wife of Byland Jewelers in Syracuse for 26 years. He formerly worked for Baber’s Jewelry in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Syracuse and a former member of the Syracuse Lions and Masonic Lodges.
He is survived by:
Wife – Gerry Byland of Milford
2 Daughters – Mrs. David (Susan) Kaminski of Angola, IN & Mrs. Thomas (Julie) Votaw of Fort Wayne, IN
6 Grandchildren – Eric Hamman, Scinda Hamman, Casey Votaw, Carly Votaw, Drew Votaw, & Troy (wife, Lisa) Votaw
2 Great Grandchildren – Taylor Hamman & Braden Votaw
2 Brothers – James Byland of Everson, WA & Nelson Louis (wife, Janet) Byland of Sebring, FL
He was preceded by his parents, 1 daughter – Gail Ellen Byland, & 2 brothers – Charles & Marion Byland
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 1413 N. Long Dr., Syracuse, IN. Memorial services will follow at 12:00 noon on Saturday at the church with Rev. Mark Eastway of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Syracuse Cemetery.

Memorial bequest may be given to Care at Home Hospice, P.O. Box 723, Goshen, IN 46526. Envelopes will be available at the church.
