Frederick M. “Fred” Bontrager Jr., 92, of Syracuse, IN passed away at 9:24 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Warsaw Meadows Care Center in Warsaw, IN. He was born on March 11, 1924 in Goshen, IN to Frederick M. & Irene Bontrager Sr.
He attended Goshen High School and was a WW II Army veteran. He was married on July 10, 1946 in Valparaiso, IN to Vivian Corrine Clifton who preceded him on January 2, 2016. He moved to the Syracuse area in 1973 from Goshen where he had lived most of his life except for a brief time in Albuquerque, NM. He formerly owned & operated BTR Manufacturing in Goshen and formerly worked at Mogul Rubber Company in Goshen, Oakwood in Syracuse for 10 years, and was a caretaker for property on Lake Wawasee for 18 years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 223 in Syracuse, V.F.W. in Syracuse, & Moose Lodge in Goshen, and formerly attended the Baptist Church in Goshen.
He is survived by:
3 Sons – Craig Bontrager of Syracuse, Doug Bontrager of Syracuse, and Bruce (Dee) Bontrager of Millersburg
5 Grand & 9 Gt. Grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister – Helen Bennett, and 3 brothers – Hubert, Ralph, and Don Bontrager
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, CR 38, Goshen, IN with Pastor Brad Cox of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by the United States Army funeral detail and American Legion Post 223.
Memorial bequest may be given to the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, P.O. Box 4204, South Bend, IN 46634. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and cemetery.
