Harold “Junior” Bitner Jr., 87, of Syracuse, IN passed away at 7:35 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Millers Merry Manor in Syracuse. He was born on December 14, 1923, in Mishawaka, IN to Harold and Lois C. (Reeve) Bitner.
He was a lifetime Cromwell / Syracuse area resident and graduated from Cromwell High School in 1941. He was married on January 22, 1984 in Syracuse to Janet I. (Downing) Messenger who survives. He retired from farming after 60 years. He was a member of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel in Syracuse, the Masonic Lodge #705 in Cromwell, and the Mizpah Shrine in Fort Wayne.
He is survived by:
Wife – Janet Bitner of Syracuse
1 Daughter – Mrs. Dan (Lori) Reynolds of Ligonier
2 Grandsons – Ryan (wife, Kelley) Reynolds & Nathan (wife, Erica) Reynolds
2 Gt. Grandchildren
4 Step-Daughters – Mrs. Justin (Pam) Hymer of Syracuse; Mrs. John (Charlene) Glon of Larwill; Mrs. Brian (Teresa) Sabin of Syracuse; Mrs. Samuel (Brenda) Morehouse of Syracuse
9 Step Grand & 7 Step Great Grandchildren
1 Sister – Mrs. Marvin (Laveta) Phares of Wolcottville, IN
He was preceded by his parents, daughter – Kathy Bitner, & son – Wendell Bitner
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. A Masonic Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011 in the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, 10419 N. Turkey Creek Rd, Syracuse, IN with Rev. Harlan Steffen of the church officiating. Burial will follow at the Sparta Cemetery in Kimmel, IN.

Memorial bequests may be given to the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, P.O. Box 544, Syracuse, IN 46567 or Masonic Lodge # 705, P.O. Box 354, Cromwell, IN 46732. Envelopes are available at the funeral home or the church.
