Helen Coplen, 88, formerly of Warsaw died peacefully at Banner Baywood Medical Center, Mesa, Arizona January 1, 2014 after a recent illness. Mesa had been her home since 1999.
Helen was born July 18, 1925 in Akron, Indiana to Wilbur Henry Landis and Alberta (Shafer) Landis. She was a 1943 graduate of Akron High School. She and Carl "Dean" Coplen were married October 16, 1943. Helen was a wonderful mother and housewife. She had the honor of having her 4 children at home for 29 years. She was a special mother and friend to all of them. Helen was known for having the perfect house for the Landis family get-togethers. Her house was always open to friends and family. Her children and grandchildren loved her chocolate chip cookies. Playing the piano was her passion. Pictures have been taken of her with each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren at the piano.
Helen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Sandy and Jack Moore of Mesa, Arizona; 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Randy and Diane Coplen of Wichita, Kansas; and John and Kathy Coplen of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The nine grandchildren who also survive are: Mark Wiseman and Travis Wiseman - both of Mesa; Ryan Coplen and Michele Coplen - both of Searcy, Arkansas; Andrea Coplen and Daniel Coplen - both of Ft Wayne; Marla Palmer, Mesa; Michelle Moore, Marion, Indiana and Will Hilton of Hastings, Minnesota. There are also 11 great-grandchildren. They were preceded in death by their oldest son, Terry, who passed away from an illness in 1964. Additionally, Helen is survived by a brother, Don Landis of Hollywood, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband: Carl "Dean" Coplen (December 30, 2013); father: Wilbur Henry Landis and mother and step father: Alberta and Harrison Perry; 5 brothers: Howard Landis, Will Landis, Bob Landis, Bud Landis and Dick Landis; and 3 sisters Esther Smith, Vera Grant and Norma Wheeler.
Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing in support of each other Tuesday, January 7th from 10 AM - 12 Noon at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. A service celebrating the lives of Carl "Dean" and Helen Irene Coplen will follow beginning at 12 Noon in the funeral home. Pastor David Hummel of Trinity United Methodist Church, of which both were members, will officiate.
