Herbert A. “Herb” Allmon, 93, passed away Monday, January 25, 2016, at 6:30 PM in Golden Living Center, Mishawaka, Indiana.
He was born to Alfred and Velva (Birch) Allmon July 11, 1922 in Columbiana, Ohio. He was a 1941 graduate of Fairfield High School, Columbiana.
Herb was inducted into the United States Army November 3, 1942 and entered active service November 17, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Ohio. He served in World War ll as an antitank gun crewman. SGT Herbert A. Allmon, a Silver Star recipient, was honorably discharged October 27, 1945 through Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Pennsylvania.
He and Margaret Martin were joined in marriage October 11, 1946 in Lisbon, Ohio. They moved from East Palestine, Ohio to Warsaw in 1967 where he would spend the rest of life.
Herb was the owner and operator of Allmon Upholstery in Warsaw. He and Margaret would work side by side for 40 years.
He was a member of Dutchtown Brethren Church, Warsaw and the American Legion Post #49. He enjoyed gardening and farming. Herb loved spending time with his family.
He will be lovingly missed by his family including his wife, Margaret; 2 daughters: Jane Swinehart, Warsaw; and Kathleen “Kathy” Marvel of Mishawaka; son and daughter-in-law: Wayne and Jocy Allmon of Decatur, Indiana; daughter-in-law: Pannee “Urai” Allmon, Thailand; 24 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 7 great, great grandchildren; and a niece: Betty Delacruz of Pierceton, Indiana.
Herb was preceded in death by 2 daughters: Alice Mae Allmon (March 27, 1950) and Nancy McCartney (January 14, 2016); son: Daniel H. Allmon (May 30, 1990); a great grandson: Brody Allan Fish (October 23, 2001); 3 sisters: Elnora Hillberry (December 28, 1997), Dorothy Osborne (September 7, 1975) and Catherine Allmon (May 17, 1930); 2 brothers: Richard Allmon (December 31, 1926); and Wilmer Allmon (May 27, 1938).
Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing memories Thursday, January 28th from 4-7 PM in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, and again one hour prior to the service in the church. A service celebrating Herb’s life will be held Friday, January 29th at 10:30 AM in Dutchtown Brethren Church with its pastor, Pastor Jack Worth, officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Indiana where military honors will be conducted by Warsaw’s American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126.
