Herman A. “Herm” Ritenour passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 8:50 PM in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, Indiana. Herm was born to Lester and Lora (Hoover) Ritenour May 12, 1934 in Wabash County, Indiana. He grew up on the home farm and was a 1952 graduate of Chester Township High School in Wabash County.
Herm and Bonnie W. Wiley were joined in marriage May 16, 1954 in Whitley County, Indiana. They would move to Warsaw, Indiana from North Manchester in 1964.
In his earlier years he spent a few years at different jobs including Farm Bureau Elevator where he drove truck, Peabody School Furniture factory and hauling milk. Then he was hired by Zimmer where he worked for 36 years retiring from its distribution department. After retirement he continued working part time. He had an independent delivery service for 7 years taking emergency items to hospitals and airports, delivered rental trucks and used cars covering most of Indiana.
Herm was a member of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church where he served as past chairman, was on the board of trustees, sang in the choir for a number of years and was an usher for several years. He was an IU and Notre Dame fan and a die-hard Cubs fan. He delivered blood for Red Cross and delivered Meals on Wheels. Herm enjoyed being a part of a Euchre Club, square dancing and traveling. He also enjoyed making sawdust in his woodshop where he made toys for grandsons and underprivileged kids. However his favorite thing was spending time with his wife and family.
Survivors include, Bonnie, his wife of 61 years, Warsaw; son and daughter-in-law: Rod and Anne Ritenour of North Manchester; 5 grandchildren: Anthony (and Crystal) Ritenour of Louisville, Kentucky; Michael Ritenour of Wabash, Indiana; Troy (and Rhonda) Custer, Todd (and Heather) Custer and Angela Custer – all of North Manchester; 9 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in passing by his parents in 1954; 2 sisters: Esther Wine and Edna White; and a brother, Cecil Ritenour.
Friends may join Herm’s family for a time of sharing Monday, January 18th from 2-7 PM in TITUS FUNERAL HOME, 2000 E. Sheridan Street, Warsaw, Indiana 46580. A service celebrating Herm’s life will take place Tuesday morning at 10:30 in the funeral home. Pastor Steve Ailes of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church will officiate. Herm will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, following the service.
