James C. “Jay” Lancaster, 79, of Syracuse, IN passed away at 4:18 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born on May 23, 1939 in Lynnville, TN to Murray & Charlotte “Lotty” (Thurman) Lancaster.
He graduated in 1960 from Central High School in Columbia, TN, attended Southern Institute of Electronics in Atlanta, GA, and served in the United States Army. He was married on January 6, 1963 in Florence, AL to Shirley G. “Gale” Vandygriff who survives. He retired in 2001 from Norfolk Southern Railroad after 30 years and formerly worked at Continental Can Company in Elkhart for 7 years. He lived in Elkhart for 50 years before moving to Syracuse in 2015.
He was a member of the Church of God in Syracuse & Disabled American Veterans in Elkhart. He formerly attended the Baptist Church in Osceola, IN and was a former member of the American Legion in Elkhart.
He is survived by:
Wife – Gale Lancaster of Syracuse
Daughter – Penny Lancaster of Marietta, GA
3 Sons – Scott (Lori) Lancaster of Syracuse, Rich Lancaster of South Bend, and James R. Lancaster of Michigan City, IN
6 Grand & 3 Gt. Grandchildren
Brother – Harold “Buddy” (Sarah) Lancaster of Shreveport, LA
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister – Jewell Breeden, and 3 brothers – Grady, Elwood, and Bill Lancaster.
Cremation will take place at Cremation Services of Kosciusko County, 4356 N St. Rd. 15, Warsaw, IN. A Celebration of Life service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, IN with Pastor Stan Owen officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Spencer Hill, TN at a later date.
