Larry Simmons, a longtime resident of rural Leesburg, passed away quietly in the early hours of Monday, July 19, 2021 at Parkview Whitley Hospital. He was 81 years old.
Born in Jalapa (Grant County) on October 31, 1939, he was the only son of Lawrence and Frances (Wolf) Simmons. He spent his formative years in Grant County and graduated from Sweetser School. Later, he became a police officer, working his way up to become Chief of the Jonesboro Police Department for several years before moving to Kosciusko County’s Lake Tippecanoe and starting a new career with Zimmer. Having dedicated more than 26 years of service, Larry retired from Zimmer in 1993.
He was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church. He loved the Lord, loved his family, and loved his church family. He was a giving person and could often be found helping friends and neighbors with projects. He also enjoyed time outdoors especially fishing and hunting; in his youth he kept hunting dogs. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed old Westerns.
On July 1, 1960, Larry was united in marriage to Ruby Marks. Ruby survives as do their sons, Brian Simmons and John (Kendra) Simmons; four grandchildren: Samantha Simmons, Dominique Simmons, Brian Vanlandingham and Cathy Randall and seven great-grandchildren: Angel Simmons, Tyler Durnell, Brittney Vanlandingham, Payton Vanlandingham, Zeke Vanlandingham, Seth Randall and Adalyn Randall. He was preceded in passing by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Simmons.
