Laura A. Smith, passed away peacefully at home in Warsaw, Indiana, on October 10, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on May 22, 1944, in Carrollton, Alabama to Melrose and Hattie Erline (Sims) Brandon, she attended local schools. Laura's deep roots in her hometown fueled her lifelong passion for cooking and her unwavering support for the University of Alabama football. Known for her exceptional southern cooking, she delighted family and friends with her culinary skills, creating numerous cherished memories around the dinner table.
A hard worker throughout her life, Laura dedicated nearly 30 years to R.R. Donnelley, where she worked mostly as a materials handler, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. She was known for her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence, traits that she also instilled in her children and grandchildren.
Laura’s interests extended beyond her career; she was an avid cross-stitcher, knitter, and crocheter, often using these talents to create thoughtful gifts for her loved ones. A proud mother and grandmother, she provided unwavering support and encouragement to her family.
Laura is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Bambi Hyde of Warsaw and her son, Chauncey (Aleta) Smith of Pierceton. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren: Josh Hyde, Dustin (Carla) Baker, Brooks Smith, and Jared (Taylor) Smith, as well as nine great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.
She is also remembered fondly by her brother-in-law, SteveSmith and sisters-in-law, Carol Brandon, Brenda Brandon, Sallie Brandon, and Erma Brandon, with whom she maintained close relationships throughout her life.
Laura was preceded in death by the love of her life, Phillip Smith, Sr., with whom she shared more than sixty wonderful years of marriage, having exchanged vows on October 28, 1961. She was also predeceased by her son, Phillip Smith, Jr.; parents, Melrose and Hattie Brandon and her brothers: David, Walter, Robert, and Kenneth Brandon, along with her sisters Edna McCool and Rebecca Johnson Brown.
