Arthur Lavon Harman, 84, passed away to be with his Lord on Friday, February 25th, 2022 at 1:00am EST at his home surrounded by family members.
Lavon, as all knew him by, was born on January 15th, 1938 in Warsaw, Indiana to W. Russell Harman and Ruby (Stookey) Harman. He was a 1956 graduate of Warsaw High School and went on to attend Ball State University and Grace College. His nickname was “Baldy” which was a result of a very bad haircut during his high school years. He married his High School sweetheart (Barbara M. Shaffer) in August 1959.
He spent his lifetime in the Warsaw area and was a long-time teacher in the Warsaw Community School Corporation, teaching 6th grade at Lincoln Elementary and 4th grade at Harrison Elementary School. He was a long time Middle School basketball coach in the Warsaw School system. He also worked the family farm northeast of Warsaw.
Lavon enjoyed spending most of his time playing with his grandchildren, mowing his lawn, and working in his garden after retirement. He loved to play cards and games, especially Euchre. He was a prankster and enjoyed telling jokes. He was competitive and very social, never knowing a stranger.
He had been a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church in Warsaw including singing in the choir, leading a number of Sunday school classes, and was a regular lay speaker. He was inducted into the Kosciusko All County Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
Those left with memories to remember and cherish him by include his wife of 62 years , Barbara Marie Harman [Warsaw], one brother: Lee (Sue) Harman [Warsaw], his sons: Doug (Nancy-deceased) Harman [Tampa] , David (Jeri) Harman [Muncie], Don (Shannon) Harman [LaGrange], and his daughter, Dianna (Mark) Allen [Leesburg] along with Gary (Glenda) Huff [Atlanta] who was a special “southern son” and including seventeen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a large extended family.
Lavon was preceded in death by his father, W. Russell Harman, Oct. 25th, 1987, his mother, Ruby Harman, April 3rd, 2000 and his sister, Leota E. May, Jan. 3rd, 2018, and daughter-in-law, Nancy S Harman, July 26, 2016.
The family will receive family and friends for a time of visitation and sharing of memories from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, March 19th, 2022, at Titus Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2000 East Sheridan Street, Warsaw. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. EST.
