Lona P. Hughes, 86, passed peacefully to be with her Lord while a patient in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was blessed to be surrounded by her loving family.
The daughter of Malcom and Plina (Ousley) Prater, Lona was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky April 10, 1930. Also in Prestonsburg and on October 14, 1946 she and Charles Hughes were joined in marriage. They moved to Silver Lake, Indiana where they would spend the remainder of their lives together until Charles’ passing on September 22, 2006.
A homemaker, Lona was a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Silver Lake, Indiana where she enjoyed caring for children of the church. Working in her vegetable and flower garden was enjoyable to her. Not only did she feed and watch birds she talked to the turtle doves getting them to occasionally flutter down to her feet.
Lona will be missed by her family including 2 sons and a daughter-in-law: Pastor Carl and Jane Hughes of Silver Lake; and Harles Hughes of Ohio; a brother: Ed Prater, Silver Lake; 2 sisters: Arizona “Zonie” Sears of Wabash, Indiana and Lizzy Whitaker of Marion, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 3 great, great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Lona was preceded in her passing by a son: Charles R. Hughes (February 14, 2000); parents: Malcom and Plina Prater; 2 brothers: Tait Prater and Asbury Prater; and 3 sisters: Roxie Hale, Ally Hale and Lola Robinson.
Friends and family will gather to share memories in the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, 108 E. Sycamore Street, Silver Lake, Indiana 46982 beginning Wednesday, July 20th at 2 PM until the time of the funeral service Thursday, July 21st at 10 AM. Pastor Ron Patrick of New Beginnings Church and World Outreach in Warsaw, Indiana will officiate. Burial will take place in Center Cemetery, Silver Lake. The family has asked that gifts in Lona’s memory be given to Full Gospel Pentecostal Church.
