Melvin E. Keplinger, Jr., 75, passed away at 8:30 PM Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was born January 26, 1940 in Beaver Dam, Indiana to Melvin Eugene and Ella Laverne (Walters) Keplinger, Sr. He was a 1958 graduate of Mentone High School, Mentone, Indiana.
Mel entered in the United States Army at Indianapolis, Indiana on June 4, 1958. He would earn the rank of SP4 before being honorably discharged at Camp Leroy Johnson, Louisiana on May 23, 1961.
Mel was united in marriage to Judith A. Walker May 30, 1960 in New Orleans, Louisiana and would share nearly 35 years together before Judith’s death September of 1994. Lucky to find love a second time, however, Mel would take Mary Lou Zimmer to be his wife August 25, 1995 in Warsaw, Indiana.
Mel would serve as an Indiana State Trooper for 28 years. He earned the rank of detective before retiring in 1991.
He was a member of American Legion Post #49 who enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. Mel was an avid baseball fan.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Lou Keplinger of Warsaw; 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Brenda (and Mike Smith) and Michelle (and Chad) Larsh, all of Warsaw; and Daphne (and Tim) Myers of Holland, Michigan; son: Melvin E. Keplinger, III of Warsaw; sister and brother-in-law: Mary and Paul Weirick of Silver Lake, Indiana; step-son and step-daughter-in-law: Robert (and Diane) Bills of Warsaw; and seven grandchildren. Friends may join the family for a time of sharing Monday, January 11th from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 PM at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan Street, Warsaw, Indiana 46580.
A service celebrating Melvin’s life will take place the following morning, Tuesday, January 12th at 10:30 AM in the funeral home. Pastor Steve Ailes of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, where graveside honors will be conducted by Warsaw’s American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126.
The family has asked that gifts in Mel’s memory be directed to a charity of choice or simple acts of kindness may be done for others in his memory.
