Patricia McCallister (Parks)

January 24, 1933 — April 26, 2016

Ms. Patricia J. McCallister (née Parks), 83, passed away on April 26, 2016, in Indianapolis, Indiana, after an extended illness.
“Patty,” as most knew her, was a resident of Muncie, Indiana. She was born January 24, 1933, in Warsaw, Indiana, to Paul Dewitt “P.D.” and Lena (Kelly) Parks. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1951, Ball Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, and Ball State University in 1978 and 1981 (B.S., Nursing and Health Science, 1978; M.S., Science and Nursing, 1981). Patty moved to Muncie in 1962 with her young family.
Once divorced from Larry McCallister of Muncie, as a single mother of five children, she worked full-time as the beloved school nurse at Burris Laboratory School, where her children were students. While working full-time and raising five children, Patty returned to school, pursuing her love of nursing while completing her B.S. and M.S. degrees.
As a born caregiver, compassion, generosity and dedication were Patty’s signature qualities. In her later career as a part-time Hospice nurse, she channeled her talents into her work, comforting those suffering with terminal illness. In 1979, she became Instructor at Ball State School of Nursing until her well-earned retirement in 2000.
Patty was a member of the Catalina Swim Club. Reliable and persistent as she was caring and generous, for many years she would swim a mile a day, every day of the summer; Patty won the Club’s annual 50 mile challenge many years running. She also loved bird-watching and could identify each and every visitor to call upon the feeders hanging outside her house. As an avid cross-word puzzler, Patty enjoyed her morning ritual of doing the Muncie Star Press crossword puzzle while bird watching from her picture window.
Upon retirement, Patty completed a history of nursing at Ball Hospital entitled, One Hundred Years of Nursing: Ball Memorial Hospital Nursing History Book, 1909-2009 (Ball State Libraries Archives, 2010, http://www.bsu.edu/libraries/archives/findingaids/RG090210.pdf). She was an enthusiastic traveler, and visited her children and grandchildren regularly in New York, Alabama, and Wisconsin, until she was limited by illness.
Patty lived for her family, and her home was the center of activity for her children, her grandchildren, and her many friends. She was a loving mother whose five children survive: Cynthia McCallister and son-in-law, Patrick G. Rooney, of Greenwich, Connecticut; Kathleen Warner, of Cullman, AL; Rebecca Hall, of Cudahey, Wisconsin; Ross McCallister and daughter-in-law Lena McCallister, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Lee McCallister and daughter-in-law Maria McCallister. She was the devoted grandmother of fourteen grandchildren: Patrick Rooney, Fiona Rooney, Liam Rooney, J.D. Warner, Dylan Warner, Ben Hall, Charlie Hall, Jack Hall, Lucy Hall, Minsung Kim, Minsoo Kim, Ross McCallister, Patricia McCallister and Anna Huettel. Patty is also survived by her nephew, nieces and their families.
Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and P.D. Parks, her sister, Frances, and her brother, Jack.
Patty was a long-time member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder; a service will be held there in her memory Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 12 o’clock Noon, 2700 West Moore Rd., Muncie , Indiana. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 2 PM.
Gifts in memory of Patty may be made to the Ball State School of Nursing . Checks may be written to the Ball State University Foundation, “School of Nursing” in memo line, 2800 West Bethel Ave., Muncie, Indiana 47304.
