Phyllis E. Matz, 62, of Cromwell, IN died at 7:32 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at her residence. She was born on February 4, 1947 in Chicago, IL to Ervin J. & Helen Louise (Kramer) Bolt.
She grew up in Pierceton and lived most of her life in the Kosciusko County area. She graduated in 1965 from Pierceton High School, in 1969 from Anderson College and in 1973 she received her Master's Degree from Indiana University in Fort Wayne. On March 22, 1975 in Winona Lake, IN she married David L. Matz who survives. She retired in the spring of 2005 after 28 years from Wawasee Community School Corporation where she was a teacher at Milford Elementary School. She had formerly taught at Syracuse and North Webster Schools.
She was a member of North Webster Church of God where she served on the Mission Board, was Sunday School Superintendant for a number of years, and taught Sunday School; was a CASA (Court Approved Special Advocate) Volunteer, a foster parent to 12 foster children, and served on the Board of Directors for the Food Pantry in Syracuse. She was also a recipient of the Kosciusko County Heart of Gold Award.
She is survived by:
Husband - Dave Matz of Cromwell;
1 Daughter - Mrs. Nathan (Emily) Fitzgerald of Fort Wayne;
1 Son - Luke (wife, Beth) Matz of Warsaw;
2 Grandchildren - Violet Fitzgerald & Marshall Matz;
2 Sisters - Mrs. Ray (Denyse) Williamson of Atwood & Mrs. Mike (Beverly) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD;
2 Brothers - Ervin & (wife, Garlene) Bolt & Calvin (wife, Debbie) Bolt both of Warsaw.
She was preceded by her parents & nephew - Greg Bolt.
Visitation will be 2:00-5:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the North Webster Church of God, 302 N. Main St., North Webster with Pastor Jeff Boyer of the church officiating. Burial will follow in North Webster Cemetery (Mock Addition).
