Rex Mast

September 11, 1940 — September 1, 2021

Rex Mast passed away quietly on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake. He was 80 years old.

The son of Albert S. and Gladys (Stahl) Mast, Rex was born at home near Sidney on September 11, 1940. He spent most of his life in the Pierceton and Sidney area and was a graduate of Pierceton High School. He was a longtime member of Pierceton’s First Baptist Church and spent more than 35 years with the Pierceton Fire Department.

Very active in his community and serving the public in several ways, Rex was a longtime member of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and severed in several capacities but held a long tenure as Secretary. He was also active in the Kosciusko County Firefighter’s Association and the county Honor Guard. He was employed for some time at Pierceton Roll Forming and Pletcher’s Grocery but may be best remembered as the owner of Mast Hardware in Pierceton. He was director of Washington/Monroe Township Civil Defense, volunteered as a driver for Pierceton EMS and supported 4-H, Kiwannis Whitko Boosters and Pierceton Chamber of Commerce with his membership and time.

Rex was a giving person who helped others without expecting favors in return. He was a jokester to those who knew him best and a protective father with a softer side few knew (for many years Rex even played Yogi bear at Jellystone Park)!

On July 3, 1960, Rex was united in marriage to Ina “Jeanette” Homan. Rex and Ina shared nearly 60 years together before her passing in 2016. His parents and a grandson, Derrik Mast also preceded him in passing. Those who survive with memories to cherish include sons: Kevin (Myra) Mast of Pierceton and Darrel Mast of South Whitley; daughter, Lisa (Bill) Hampton of Chapman Lake and grandchildren: Heather (Ken) Gero, of Havelock, NC, David Sainer of Pierceton, Jared (Emma) Sainer of Winona Lake and Stephanie Campbell of Pierceton. Several great-grandchildren also survive.
