Richard D. “Dick” Mitchell, 81, of Warsaw, IN passed away at 8:10 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2012 at his residence. He was born November 8, 1930 in El Paso, TX to Oda E. & Zola Iva (Reeg) Mitchell.
He lived most of his life in Whitley and Kosciusko Counties and graduated in 1949 from Larwill High School. He was a United States Marine veteran and was married on February 14, 1981 in Warsaw to Sue Ann (Donnelly) Ray who survives.
Mr. Mitchell opened the Gulf station in North Webster in 1957. He then sold for Smith Ford, Golden Life and Archway Cookies. He retired from Accur-Cut Machine Shop in 1992 serving as a machinist and salesperson. He worked part time in the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office as the bookkeeper following his retirement from full time employment.
Mitchell held the elected position of Tippecanoe Township Trustee for 24 years. He served on the Tippecanoe Township Board for five years. He served on the North Webster / Tippecanoe Township Fire Department for 30+ years and was one of the original drivers for North Webster EMS when it was formed in 1975.
He was a 55 year member of the North Webster Lions Club.
He was one of three founders of the Indiana Snowmobile Association, Inc. and was a member and past treasurer of the Indiana Vintage Snowmobile Association, Inc. He served as the Co Chairman for the North Webster Winter Festival in 2010 and 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter – Laurel Jean Mitchell, son - Richard Dean Mitchell, Brother – Harold Mitchell, and sister – Lois Hammel.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 5:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Owen Family Funeral Home, St. Rd. 13 & C.R. 500N., North Webster, IN. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Judy officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in North Webster with military graveside rites performed by American Legion Post 253.
