Robert G. “Bob” Showalter, 84, of Leesburg, IN and Yalaha, FL passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014 at his winter home in Florida. He was born on September 8, 1929 in Fort Wayne, IN to Wilbur H. “Nick”and Helen (Guild) Showalter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Marietta Showalter, daughters Susan Marie Thurgood of Centennial, CO and Julia Ellen (Larry) Ott of Lafayette, IN and his sons Daniel Guild (Kimberly) Showalter of Columbus, IN and Robert “Andy” Showalter of Fort Wayne, IN. Other survivors include nine grandchildren as well as sisters Helen (late, Claude) Hewitt of Marion, IN and Margaret (late, William) Keith of Tallahassee, FL and a brother Richard (“Bunny”) Showalter of Grand Ledge, MI.
He graduated in 1947 from Marion High School, in 1952 from Ball State in Muncie, IN with his Bachelor’s Degree and in 1955 from Ball State with his Master’s Degree. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War.
He retired in 1998 as Professor Emeritus from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN after 33 years in the Audiology and Speech Science Department where he was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. He formerly worked for 8 years at Peru Community School Corporation in Indiana. He retired to Lake Tippecanoe in 1998 from West Lafayette, IN. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in North Webster, IN and Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg, FL.
The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the North Webster United Methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Road, North Webster, IN with Senior Pastor David Smitley of the church officiating.
