Sandra K. “Sandy” Groninger, 75, of Warsaw, Indiana passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 3:12 a.m. in Avalon Village, Ligonier, Indiana. She had been afflicted by Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease for 8 years.
The daughter of Bill and Ruby (Duncan) Dorrell, Sandy was born June 29, 1941 in Muncie, Indiana.
She was a 1959 graduate of Mentone High School and lived most of her life in Kosciusko County.
On March 8, 1964, Sandy and Thomas “Tom” Groninger were joined in marriage in Atwood, Indiana. She was a loving and devoted wife for the nearly 53 years they were blessed to share.
Sandy and Tom were co-owners of G & G Hauling & Excavating in Warsaw where she was the secretary. As Tom would say, “She took care of everything. I just had to do the work.”
She was an active member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Atwood. She loved to cook for the “boys” at the shop as well as for church dinners and the Atwood Lions Club. She enjoyed mushroom hunting and liked to knit. Most of all, Sandy will be remembered for her sacrificial love as she would drop whatever she was doing to help family and friends – especially for her children, grandchildren, and the G & G family.
Although Sandy is in a much better place, she will be greatly missed by friends and family. Those whose memories will be treasured most include her husband, Tom; daughter and son-in-law: Teresa and Joey Winnett of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Cary and Kathy Groninger of Mentone; and Richard “Rich” and Sheila Groninger, Warsaw; 8 grandchildren: Austin (and Savannah) Stephens of Davis, Oklahoma; Paige Winnett and Whitney Winnett – both of Elmore City, Oklahoma; Leigh Groninger, Jay Groninger and Joel Groninger – all of Mentone; and Sam Groninger and Rilee Groninger – both of Warsaw; 1 great grandson: Tucker Stephens, at home; 1 sister: Beatrice Teel of Noblesville, Indiana; and 1 brother: Fred Dorrell of Warsaw.
Sandy was preceded in passing by a sister and a brother: Mary Hawk and Robert “Bob” Klus respectively.
The family will welcome friends and family Saturday February 18th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Titus Funeral Home. A private family service will be held. Pastor Jim Lawson of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Atwood and Pastor Jerry Thomas, former pastor of Otterbein United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery, Warsaw, at a later date.
The family has asked that gifts in Sandy’s memory be directed to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 306 E. Main Street, Atwood, Indiana 46502 or to Alzheimer’s Association, 6324 Constitution Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46804.
