Tal Stewart Smith passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016 in his Indianapolis, Indiana home. He was 63 at the time of his passing.
He was born on May 15, 1953 in McDonald Hospital, Warsaw, Indiana and was the son of Jerry L. and Wylan (Titus) Smith.
Tal graduated from Warsaw High School with the class of 1971 and grew in Warsaw’s Trinity United Methodist Church. He attended the University of Houston’s School of Finance for two years and was a 1975 graduate of Florida State University. Tal received a Bachelor’s Degree focusing on finance, computers and real estate.
Tal began his working career at Counting House Bank in North Webster, Indiana. He was an assistant cashier, Personnel Director and worked in real estate mortgage operations during his time there. He also served as Secretary on the Board of Directors.
He had been very active in the International Palace of Sports Youth Foundation where he served as Treasurer. He also served as Vice President of the Heart of the Lakes Business Association and was a member of both the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and the Elks Lodge.
Tal moved from banking to become Co-Owner/Owner of businesses in North Webster, Syracuse and Goshen, Indiana. In addition, he also served on the Indiana State Liquor Board for several years.
He moved to Indianapolis in 2008 and spent the last several years helping to care for his special-needs grandson, Corwin – who was the “light of his life.”
Tal loved to travel, taking his family on trips to such places as Aruba, Cancun, Dominican Republic and Florida. He also had a great love for boating and the water, having grown up on Winona Lake and living on both Lake Tippecanoe and Webster during his lifetime.
His other passion was sports – especially Florida State, Colts and Pacers whose games he attended whenever he could.
Those who survive Tal include his sister, Cynthia L. (husband, Gary) Goshert of Warsaw; nieces, Gretchen Goshert of Milford, Indiana and Megan (husband, Tony) Nash of Zionsville, Indiana; great-niece, Sienna Grimes of Zionsville; great-nephew, Jayden Nash of Zionsville; stepson, James (wife, Sara) Hoyt of Indianapolis and five step grandchildren: Corwin Hoyt, Jenna Carroll, Gabriel Carroll, Logan Russell and Aydin Russell, all of Indianapolis.
Those who preceded Tal in passing include his father, Jerry L. Smith and mother, Wylan Smith who died on July 6, 2015 and December 16, 2004, respectively.
Friends may join the family for a time of sharing and visitation on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 11 AM to 1 PM in Titus Funeral Home, 2000 East Sheridan Street, Warsaw, Indiana. A funeral service will follow, beginning at 1 PM in the Funeral Home. Pastor Joey Nelson of Stone’s Hill Community Church, Ligonier, Indiana, will officiate. Burial will be in Warsaw’s Oakwood Cemetery.
