Vada J Overmeyer

June 20, 1928 — January 6, 2024

Winona Lake

Vada June (Brasel) Overmeyer was born June 20, 1928, a warm sunny day in Harvey, Illinois, at the home of her parents, Harry and Beatrice Brasel. She was one of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. Growing up Vada enjoyed playing sports, skating, dancing, and being active, something she never outgrew.

In 1945 she married Robert (Bob) Overmeyer. The couple was married twenty-eight years when he passed away in 1973. Together they raised their three children, Glory, Dennis (deceased), and Daryl, in Lansing, Illinois. Vada often shared happy memories from those years of their annual family fishing trips to Bemidji, Minnesota, and of the time spent near family at their weekend home near the Tippecanoe River in Monterey, Indiana.

Vada had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was especially proud of her twelve great-great grandchildren (and one on the way!).

In 1978 Vada was united in marriage with Eugene (Gene) Highsmith. The couple shared 20 years together traveling throughout the country and splitting their time between Florida and their lake cottage in Indiana. After Gene’s passing, Vada did not slow down. She lived in Florida where she bowled in leagues and attended dances multiple times each week. It was there she developed her creative side, making crafts of all kinds. She also served as treasurer for her church. Her relationship with Christ was an important part of her life.

Vada moved to Warsaw ten years ago in order to be closer to family. She continued bowling in leagues and was active with friends from her Sunday School class. She never turned down an invitation to play games, and at 95 she still was able to climb up into a topless ‘69 Blazer and enjoy a sunny ride through the country.

Vada moved to Grace Village Independent Living five years ago where she enjoyed playing board games, wii-bowling, and especially her art classes. After a brief illness, she passed away in her sleep January 6, 2024, at Grace Village.

She will be laid to rest in Monterey, Indiana, alongside her husband, Bob. Her children are planning a private family gathering.
