Virginia B. "Ginger" Smith, 79, passed away Wed, Nov 27, 2013 at 9:42 PM in her Winona Lake, IN home.
Ginger was born May 17, 1934 to Harold and Irene (Torell) Bergstrom in Plainfield, NJ.
She was a graduate of Van Wert High School; earned a BS in Education, MS in Guidance and Counseling and Certification in School Psychology.
On Jun 17, 1958, she and John L. Smith were married in Madison, WI. For many years they made their home in the Warsaw/Winona Lake area. He would precede her in death Jul 26, 1983.
Ginger was a Guidance Counselor for the Whitko School Corp for 7 years, after school tutor at Black Lake Lodge for Whitko High School students, taught summer school for Whitko Middle School students and taught weekly classes to divorcing parents for the Whitley County Court System.
She was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Warsaw, where she taught Sunday School for 3 years; coordinated and taught Church Vacation Bible School; served as secretary, vice president and president for Warsaw YMCA for 4-5 years; secretary and vice president of Cardinal Learning Center for 8 years; secretary of the board for Warsaw Parks and Recreation (appointed by the mayor); board member of CASA for 7 years; division chairman for United Way for a year; Wayne Township Cancer chairman for 1 year; member of American Association of University Women for 7 years where she had served as its treasurer, vice president and president; also worked with Welcome Wagon and Meals on Wheels. She was proud that she lived with a clean criminal record - no misdemeanors and no felonies - not even a traffic accident report on her record. Ginger was the kind of parent and grandparent who was committed to her church, family and community. She will always be remembered as a kind, loving and compassionate person who will be greatly missed as a mother, friend and mentor.
Ginger is survived by 2 sons: Brendt L. Smith and Harold Smith, both of Winona Lake; 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Christine and William Cuban of Winona Lake and Teresa and Paul Beckwith of Fishers, IN and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, I424 W. Market Street, Warsaw, Sat, Dec 7th from 10 AM - 12 Noon with a memorial service following. Burial will take place in the columbarium of the church and in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
